Katona Winery Ltd. is a family enterprise founded in autumn 1996. Nowadays we cultivate grapes on 44 hectares with over 43 hectares on the southern shore of Lake of Balaton, in the wine district of Balatonbolgár and since 2006 we also cultivate grapes on 1 hectares area in the wine region of Tokaj-Hegyalja.
One of the three Katona siblings who established the enterprise, Ferenc Katona is the professional chief of the winery. He had worked as a main wine specialist for years at BB Wine Corporation. The two other siblings, Tibor and Klára Katona, take major parts in the life of the business too, on the field of administration, finance, marketing and leading the wine cellar and distribution centre in Budafok.
With their children gradually becoming more and more involved in the operations of the winery, the new generation is preparing to take over the business and thus preserve the traditions of wine making.
Grapes have been cultivated for more than a thousand years in the Balaton wine district. Due to the excellent fundament provided by the lake’s surface, which affects the climate of this unique area prosperously, our wines are characterized by fine grape aroma and fresh scents, as well as well-balanced acids.
Besides the most significant varieties of the world (such as Chardonnay, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon), the traditional Hungarian varieties can also be found in our cultivation.
The luscious fruits are processed in our wine facility in Balatonboglár, and later a part of the fermented wines are transported to Budapest to our central wine-cellar for further treatments and ripening. White wines are stored in stainless steel containers, under reductive conditions in order to preserve the primary aromatic flavours as perfectly as possible. In contrast, our red wines are stored at least two years in oak barrels, later followed by bottling and then distribution.
The essence of the technology is the stimulation of the plants’ immune system and strengthening it by natural substances. Our winery has recognized how to utilize this technology of international patent in grape cultivation.
The so-called Akane substance dissolved in PI water is able to change the water retention capacity of the soil, once it is irrigated. Thus, vine plants get nourished more efficiently, which fosters their growth and fruit yield as well. Since this treatment increases the resistance against pests and diseases of a plant, less chemical is needed to protect the plant, thus sparing the environment too. More vital plants bear healthier fruit that is richer in juice, and our winery is proud of making wines of such excellent raw material.
By the help of Pi technology we can increase the absorption of such useful substances in the human body, as flavonoids, antioxidants and vitamins that wine contains. We believe that our wines contribute to maintain and improve our customers’ health.
Our wine tasting cellar in Budafok is awaiting and welcoming you to taste our award winning wine specials.
Furthermore, we are capable to organize wine tasting events combined with cellar visiting tours as well. Our tasting hall is big enough for up to 160 people in Budapest and up to 50 people in Balatonboglár and we are looking forward to help you organize your events or parties there, whether it is private or professional.
Our wine facility and tasting hall is also open to the public, but reservation is required. Our further offers are vintage festivals and team-building events.
